Ukrainian power grid faces emergency outages in Kiev region and beyond
A statement from the national energy company Ukrenergo indicates that emergency power cuts may be required in Kiev, as well as in the surrounding Kiev region. The report originates from the Ukrainian publication Klymenko Time, which relayed the agency’s caution about possible outages during critical periods.
The notice specifies that there may be emergency interruptions in Kiev and in the adjacent Kiev region. It also notes that in Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions, electricity supply could be restricted during peak usage according to planned schedules.
The company emphasized that other areas are not currently expected to be affected by these targeted measures.
Earlier communications from Ukrenergo indicated damage to high voltage infrastructure in various parts of the country. In a February briefing, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy reported that heat and hydroelectric facilities across six regions sustained damage and that emergency shutdowns were initiated. Officials warned that light and heating supplies could be interrupted in several communities. In some cities, including Zaporozhye, city leaders reported damage to energy facilities and related fires.
These developments reflect ongoing challenges to the energy sector as authorities work to maintain stability while repairs are coordinated. Observers note that such outages are typically managed through load-shedding strategies designed to prevent wider electrical failures and to safeguard critical infrastructure. The situation remains fluid as engineers and grid operators assess risk, implement contingency plans, and prioritize regions under strain. [Source: Ukrenergo, Ministry of Energy, local authorities]
