Elche-based Hiperber expands beyond Alicante, eyeing Valencia and Albacete

Hiperber, the Elche supermarket chain, is widening its reach after consolidating a strong network in Alicante. The company confirmed plans to push into Albacete and, more notably, Valencia as part of its ongoing expansion strategy. It announced investments exceeding eight million euros for new openings in the coming year, signaling a determined push into neighboring regions.

The expansion blueprint specifies eight new stores, with only two located in Alicante province. The towns of Kastalla and Mariola Banyeres are among the Alicante entries. A new presence will also be established in Albacete in the Caudet area. The remaining five openings will occur in Valencia province, in municipalities including Buñol, Alginet, Paiporta, Cheste, and Valencia city itself.

With these openings, Hiperber aims to reach 87 supermarkets by year end and strengthen its footprint in Albacete and Valencia, where seven stores will be operating after recent openings in Ontinyent and Xàtiva in previous years. This marks a significant milestone in the chain’s growth trajectory across the region, reinforcing the brand’s strategy of expanding near existing markets where it already has a strong presence.

The chain’s leadership emphasizes the ambition behind the plan.

As explained by the company leadership, next year will see a substantial effort to continue the expansion and maintain the current growth approach. The strategy relies on a steady, near-market expansion pattern, placing new stores in locations close to where Hiperber already operates and serves customers there.

Features

Most of the 2024 openings will be in locations covering about 1,200 to 1,500 square meters. Each new center will include parking and the core departments that customers value most: a butcher and delicatessen staffed by professionals, a broad range of goods from local suppliers, and additional services such as a free fruit shop and bakery. These elements reflect the chain’s commitment to community-oriented, fresh offerings and convenient shopping experiences.

Every new store is expected to stock around 7,000 references, blending leading national brands with the chain’s selected distribution partners. The facilities will feature modern cooling systems and energy-efficient lighting to support sustainability and lower operating costs for both shoppers and the business.

The expansion is projected to create employment opportunities, with roughly 140 positions added to support the new centers. By year-end, the workforce across the group is expected to approach 1,300 employees, reflecting the scale of growth anticipated from these openings.

Last year the chain achieved sales of 177.7 million euros, marking a 13.7 percent rise from the previous year when turnover stood at 156 million euros, according to company disclosures. The growth came alongside the upward trajectory in the number of stores, shoppers, and staff across the network. In 2022, the chain recorded 14 million purchases across its supermarkets, a 9.4 percent increase from the year before, and the year also saw the launch of online shopping for the first time.
