For a year and seven months, he evaded justice and fought every option to locate a fugitive like him. According to a national investigation channel, the Police have arrested Carlos Navarro, known as ‘el Yoyas’, in l’Anoia (Barcelona). He had been on the run since November 2022, when the Gran Canaria Penal Court 5 issued a warrant for his capture.

Navarro, famed for his role in the second season of the reality show Big Brother, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for repeatedly abusing his ex-wife, Fayna Bethencourt, whom he met in 2001 on the popular program and later married. He was also convicted for abusing the couple’s two children.

Removed for violence

The operation to secure his arrest was led by the Police with cooperation from the Mossos d’Esquadra.

Twenty-three years ago, ‘el Yoyas’ was expelled by the Big Brother organization due to violent behavior toward Bethencourt and another housemate, just days after the show began.

The escape

The verdict labeling Navarro guilty became final in April 2022, yet instead of serving his sentence, the abuser fled to avoid imprisonment. For nineteen months, Navarro hid in various locations across Spain.

From different hideouts, he gave interviews to several media outlets and even asked for “pardon or amnesty” from the government. Meanwhile, his victim begged for protection for herself and her children.

“My torturer is on the street”

In a recent YouTube broadcast, the woman described how her abuser, now a fugitive, is free to roam. She questioned the message being sent to other women living what she endured.

The judge who convicted Navarro noted that his ex-partner had consistently maintained the same account, both to the police and in court, and that those statements were corroborated by witnesses and forensic psychological reports.

Physical assaults

The testimony of Navarro’s own children, minors at the time, described witnessing their father’s violence toward their mother. A cousin of the victim also testified that Bethencourt hid in the bathroom to take calls and ask for help.

Bethencourt presented multiple photographs showing the injuries caused by several episodes of abuse, along with forensic psychological reports on both the complainant and the children.
