At least 25 people were killed and about 50 were wounded on a Saturday attack allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the city of El Fasher in North Darfur, western Sudan. The regional Health Ministry confirmed the toll to the press.

The ministry’s director general, Ibrahim Jater, told reporters that the fatalities and injuries resulted from RSF assaults on a livestock market and surrounding neighborhoods, highlighting the disruption caused to daily life in the area.

Dozens of wounded were moved to a local hospital, including women and children, with several in critical condition, according to a senior source. The official noted a shortage of medicines and medical supplies in the aftermath of the attack.

Resistencia committees in El Fasher, an informal network counting war victims, accused the RSF of firing five projectiles at the livestock market despite civilian presence in the bazaar area.

To date, the RSF have not issued any public response to these claims.

Fighting in El Fasher since May has left more than 2,000 people dead or injured, according to the Health Ministry of North Darfur.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which supports the local hospital, reported that from May 10 to June 11 a total of 226 people had died and 1,418 were wounded across the impacted area.

El Fasher represents one of the final pockets controlled by the Sudanese army in Darfur, a region where much territory has fallen under the control of paramilitary forces since fighting began between the two sides in April 2023.

Approximately 328,000 people have fled El Fasher to other parts of Darfur, including Darfur East and Darfur South, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Sudan now faces the world’s worst displacement crisis, with about 10 million internally displaced people and 2 million refugees, while tens of thousands have died, drawing on multiple official estimates.
