Drawing supports child development and learning, study finds

Drawing studies from Staffordshire University show that when children draw, their creativity flourishes and their ability to communicate, learn, and remember improves. The researchers shared their findings with the Speech portal, highlighting how drawing activities can translate into clearer thinking and better classroom performance.

For young learners, drawing becomes a lens through which they examine the world. It helps them describe what they observe, articulate their own interpretations, and practice problem solving in a visual format. The act of illustrating concepts allows children to connect ideas in new ways, making abstract information more tangible. In these trials, one group of children learned scientific concepts by drawing what they understood, while another group learned the same material without drawing. The results showed that those who drew tended to grasp and recall the material more effectively, suggesting that the process of translating ideas into images strengthens comprehension and retention.

Memory benefits emerged as a notable outcome. When children were asked to depict events from stories or explanations through pictures, they remembered more details than those who did not use drawings. The more frequently children engaged in drawing, the stronger their memory appeared to become, indicating a positive correlation between visual representation and cognitive retention.

The researchers also noted that collaborative drawing can be especially powerful. By sketching together, parents and children not only build skills but also gain insight into the child’s experiences and thinking. This shared activity fosters communication, empathy, and a deeper sense of connection, inviting families to dedicate more time to drawing as a meaningful practice that supports development across multiple domains.
