Two young individuals from the Dominican Republic faced severe charges tied to the abuse of minors in detention settings. They allegedly drugged youths who were staying in reception centers and proceeded to harass them sexually inside an apartment located at 275 Avenida de Joan Miró in Cala Major, Mallorca. The Palma Court’s Second Division handed down a multi-year prison sentence as part of ongoing proceedings involving sexual exploitation, corruption of minors, and drug trafficking. Initially, the prosecutor sought a far longer term, around thirty-one years, but a harmonization agreement between the defense and the prosecution substantially reduced the total penalties.
The decision by the Palma Court on Tuesday covers events between September 2021 and February 2022. During that period, custodial youths escaping reception facilities were repeatedly visiting the Cala Major residence. The address served as a focal point for activities involving several minors who had left their homes and sometimes sought shelter with relatives.
Per the prosecutor’s account, the defendants allegedly supplied alcohol and cocaine, offered gifts and even money in advance to secure compliance. The drugs were reportedly ingested by the victims, pushing many toward a near unconscious state. In this vulnerable condition, sexual harassment was carried out, including touching, oral activity, and intercourse.
On one occasion, one of the accused followed a minor to the ground floor of the building, took the youth to his home within the same complex, and exploited the individual while their drug use was heightened by the influence of substances.
Medicines at reception centers
The prosecutor’s narrative notes that several minors suffered vomiting after the sexual acts described, which correlated with their high level of drug intake. Beyond administration, the substances were allegedly distributed or shared with other adolescents at children’s centers.
Under the terms of the settlement, one defendant accepted a sentence of seven years in prison and a fine of 4,340 euros for persistent sexual harassment, abuse of minors, and public health offenses. The other defendant agreed to a three-year sentence and a fine of 1,000 euros, along with penalties for sexual abuse and drug trafficking.
