In Slovakia a perplexing event is unfolding as hundreds of swans appear to be affected by substances linked to ferrets and certain plants. The birds have shown a remarkable attraction to a stimulant in the area, with experts describing their reaction as akin to a drug dependence. These swans have lingered on the fields for months, seemingly unable to depart.
Each year, swans visit parts of Slovakia in search of rapeseed plants to feed on. This season, however, many locals report a shift toward poppy fields, which has created new challenges for the birds and those who observe them.
The swans have claimed more than five hectares of fertile land where this species thrives, returning to these plants for extended periods. Through continuous feeding, the birds appear to experience sensations comparable to narcotic effects, including numbness, relaxation, and a dampening of pain responses.
As if intoxicated by the plants for weeks, the swans have lost their ability to fly. Local farmers have watched with astonishment as these birds damaged the fields, yet the animals remained immobilized in the same areas.
Digestive issues have also arisen, contributing to the decline among the swan populations in certain spots.
Balints Pam, a farmer in the region, noted the arrival of roughly 200 swans in February. His interpretation reflects the possibility that the animals were drawn not only by the poppies but by the large puddles formed after rains, which provided a resting and feeding ground for the birds during hungry and thirsty periods.
“Every part of the poppy plant can be harmful, except the seeds. The swans appear to ignore this and may harm themselves in the process”, the farmer added.
The poppy plant secretes latex used in the production of some narcotics such as heroin and opium. Authorities warn that uncontrolled consumption is dangerous for wildlife and the environment alike.
Transferred to a detox center
In response to the situation, a team of experts moved to the region to investigate and address the unusual behavior. With travel restrictions in place, the personnel worked from their current location, using a range of methods to guide the swans away from vulnerable areas.
Reportedly, some swans were transported to a rehabilitation facility with the aim of restoring health and mobility, so they can eventually regain their natural flying abilities and reintegrate into their typical habitats.

Note: environmental authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the broader impact on local ecosystems and farm operations. The situation underscores the delicate balance between wildlife behavior, agricultural practices, and the potential risks posed by certain plant species in shared landscapes.
