Deputy PM Visits Flood Zone After Kakhovka Dam Breach and Assesses Restoration

During a recent reconnaissance inside the emergency zone, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin toured the flood-affected sector around the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region. The visit, reported by TASS, focused on assessing the situation after the dam breach and evaluating recovery measures on the ground.

According to Khusnullin, the liquidation headquarters has been winding down and the restoration efforts are approaching completion. He noted that most of the drainage work is finished, with only a single borehole still requiring cleaning. Water removal and site drying have advanced to a stage where the bulk of flooded areas have been emptied. The official emphasized that progress has been steady and that the team is near the end of its primary tasks in this zone.

Earlier updates described a severe impact following the breach at the Kakhovka hydroelectric facility. The casualty count rose to 53, with about 140 individuals hospitalized. On the night of June 6, the upper section of the Kakhovskaya plant collapsed in the Nova Kakhovka district, triggering widespread flooding across dozens of settlements, including the cities of Kherson and New Kakhovka. Both Russia and Ukraine exchanged accusations about responsibility for the dam’s failure, highlighting the geopolitical tensions surrounding the incident.

In the aftermath, authorities reported that six settlements and approximately 9,500 homes were inundated, underscoring the scale of the disaster and the ongoing challenges in providing relief and rebuilding efforts for affected communities.

Reports from the Armed Forces also indicated intelligence discussions about the status of Russian strategic aviation, reflecting the broader security implications that accompany the crisis and the subsequent mobilization of regional resources to manage both humanitarian and strategic concerns.
