In Alicante city center, National Police officers tracked down and detained a fugitive who had been evading Belgian justice. The individual faced multiple indictments from Belgian courts, including murder, armed robbery, membership in an organized crime group, kidnapping, and illegal detention. The arrest was confirmed by police sources on a recent Saturday.
The breakthrough came after the CIMACC-091 Intelligent Communications Command and Control Center identified a client staying at a hotel in Alicante as the person targeted by Belgian authorities. Given the international nature of the case, officers from the Alicante Provincial Police Station were assigned to the area. Two patrols from the Citizens Attention Group monitored the hotel and located the suspect inside a room where he was identified and taken into custody. He was then transferred to the Alicante Provincial Police Station for processing. The international arrest warrant indicated that the fugitive had been serving a prison sentence in Brussels since 2018 for violent robbery and for belonging to a criminal network, as well as illegal detention with an accomplice. In 2022, just days after parole, he participated in further acts that triggered renewed pursuit.
Investigators established that the suspect had become involved in a violent incident at a pharmacy in the Belgian town of Thuin. After the robbery, he fled in a vehicle. A pursuit ensued, during which the assailants disregarded police instructions and drove recklessly, endangering other road users by traveling in the wrong direction at high speed through city streets.
The vehicle was eventually immobilized in a cul-de-sac within a residential area. The suspects attempted to flee on foot, but reinforced police teams arriving at the scene captured them. In the aftermath, the fugitive attempted to evade Belgian justice by seeking hiding spots in Spain. The Brussels court canceled the probation already granted, deciding to enforce the remaining seven and a half years of the sentence. A European arrest warrant was issued for extradition, and the fugitive was detained. A 34-year-old Italian national was placed under the authority of the National Court of Inquiry and made available to execute the return order. This operation underscores the close cooperation between Belgian authorities and Spanish police in pursuing suspects across borders, and it demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated anti-crime efforts in Europe.
