A potential risk of relapse and the gravity of the events underpin the decision by Vigo Instruction Court No. 5 to keep former GRAPO member Manuel Baña Gil in temporary prison. He traveled to Castrelos Park on 15 September armed with a firearm and already had fired at a young man twice during a prior dispute about dogs, narrowly missing him. The judge noted that the reform proposal offered by the defense had consistently argued for continued security detention, and that there remains a significant danger that a similar act could be repeated, according to information obtained by this newspaper.

Crimes

The case is examining possible charges of attempted murder or threats in addition to the illegal possession of weapons as part of the ongoing investigation and proceedings.

Procedures performed

Several crucial steps have been taken within the framework of this process. Victims have been identified and interviewed. A 28-year-old man and his girlfriend witnessed the threat to their dog and recorded the incident with their mobile phones. The footage shows Baña drawing his firearm and threatening the young man by firing two shots as the victim sought cover behind a tree, with the assailant shouting that the victim would die and that he had been seeking him for some time. Fortunately, none of the bullets connected with the target.

Health situation

In addition to the testimonies, a cognitive assessment of Manuel Baña Gil, aged 69, is planned in the near future. He is currently housed in a care module at the A Lama prison and is prescribed the medications he had been taking previously. Law enforcement is also conducting analyses of the 9 mm firearm seized from the detainee and the bullets located at his residence.
