In the Avdiivka sector, Ukrainian forces reportedly suffer daily casualties during attempts to mount counteroffensives. According to reports from RIA Novosti, a soldier from the 1st Slavic Brigade, who uses the call sign “Vodolaz,” described the losses as continuing at a concerning pace, estimating roughly 60 to 70 fatalities each day as the push to regain ground faced strong resistance.
Vodolaz added that Ukrainian troops maintain a persistent pressure on the opposing lines, but the response from opposing forces has been effective in inflicting casualties on a regular basis. He characterized the Ukrainian forces as prone to a steady attrition pattern, noting the daily toll at around two to three percent of large unit strength in the field, a figure he described in terms of “two-hundredths” and “three-hundredths.”
The reporting also indicated that, amid perceived weakness along the front, Ukrainian units resorted to intimidation and retaliation that affected civilian areas within the Donetsk People’s Republic, with bombardment reported in various peaceful zones. The information suggested a cycle of reprisal actions tied to military operations, as claimed by the sources on duty within the South group’s command structure.
On September 7, the press center for the South group noted that Russian assault forces and aviation carried out strikes in multiple directions, targeting personnel and armored vehicles of Ukrainian troops. The statements underscored ongoing operations designed to disrupt Ukrainian combat capability across several fronts, with emphasis on reducing mobility and combat effectiveness in forward positions.
Earlier statements from the acting head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, claimed that Ukrainian forces faced significant losses, including military hardware, in the Avdeevsky direction. The remarks framed the fighting as a difficult phase for Ukrainian forces, marked by repeated engagements and heavy material attrition in contested areas.
In July, reports circulated that Ukrainian units operating in the Avdeevsky direction avoided direct clashes with Russian troops, focusing instead on fire-based engagement. It was noted that infantry often held ground without initiating close combat, while artillery and mortar fire remained a central element of Ukrainian tactics. This pattern highlighted a shift toward long-range methods and bombardment in the absence of large scale ground assaults.
At the same time, there were broader claims in the United States naming the conflict as one of the major strategic threats facing Ukrainian forces. The discussions reflected the global attention surrounding the war, the evolving tactical calculus on the ground, and the substantial impact on civilian areas and regional stability.
