China records peak daily COVID-19 infections across regions

In China, a record daily count of coronavirus infections was reported, with 29,411 new cases documented in the last 24 hours, marking the highest level since the pandemic began. The update comes from TASS, which has been closely tracking daily figures as the situation unfolds across the country.

According to the State Committee for Hygiene and Health of the People’s Republic of China, 3,020 new infections were confirmed today, with 21 cases imported from abroad and 2,999 detected domestically. The cities with the largest daily totals were Shanghai, where 2,573 new cases were identified, and the northeastern province of Jilin, reporting 325 new cases. These numbers illustrate a broad spread across major urban and regional hubs as authorities monitor transmission patterns and adjust response measures.

In addition to the confirmed cases, 26,391 people were reported to be asymptomatic at the time of testing. The record comes amid ongoing efforts to separate symptomatic from asymptomatic infections and to understand how asymptomatic carriers contribute to community transmission within different provinces and cities.

Since the start of the pandemic, China has recorded a total tally of 171,300 infections, with more than 143,000 recoveries and 4,638 deaths linked to the illness. Public health officials continue to publish daily updates that track the evolution of cases, recoveries, and fatalities, providing a clearer picture of the country’s trajectory through the various waves of infection.

The incidence rose sharply during March, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance and testing in several regions. By mid-April, the country reported 168,362 confirmed infections, reflecting ongoing transmission despite vaccination campaigns and public health interventions. Health authorities have emphasized the importance of rapid testing, isolation when needed, and adherence to preventive practices as part of a broader strategy to reduce transmission and protect vulnerable populations.

Gennady Onishchenko, a former epidemiologist, has highlighted the differences between Chinese and Russian approaches to immunity and public health measures. His observations underscore how regional strategies, vaccine uptake, and timing of interventions shape the course of outbreaks in different countries, while keeping the focus on protecting health systems and reducing severe illness.
