China’s Ministry of National Security announced on Monday that it has detained an individual accused of spying on behalf of the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. The statement referenced a carefully conducted investigation and described the suspect as a foreign man engaged in espionage activities against China.
The authorities identified the arrestee as Huang Moumou, said to be the head of a consultancy firm operating abroad. The ministry asserted that MI6 had established a cooperative intelligence relationship with Huang since 2015 and had instructed him to travel to China on multiple occasions, urging him to use his public-facing roles as a cover to instigate political dissent.
According to the report, MI6 provided professional intelligence training to Huang Moumou in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, and supplied specialized equipment intended to facilitate cross-linking of intelligence efforts. The ministry indicated that Huang faced coercive measures in accordance with the law.
The evidence allegedly shows that the spy supplied classified state secrets and intelligence reports to MI6 on several occasions. During the investigation, the national security apparatus coordinated with consular services, and the ministry stated that Huang’s legal rights were protected in line with legal procedures.
This announcement arrives amid ongoing exchanges of accusations between China and the United Kingdom over espionage allegations seen as a threat to national security. Beijing has rejected London’s statements, calling them completely unfounded and insisting that China remains vigilant in safeguarding its information infrastructure and sovereignty.
