A vehicle scrapping facility in Catral was the scene of a large fire on Sunday, affecting at least 40 vehicles, according to officials from the Provincial Firefighters Consortium.
The incident produced no reported injuries. The blaze began shortly after 6 a.m., and firefighters anticipate long hours of work ahead, as the fire proves difficult to control due to the sheer number of vehicles involved.
The scrap yard is situated at the 4th kilometer marker on the road linking Crevillent to Catral.
The following update was posted during early efforts to contain the flames, with responders coordinating from a command unit that includes personnel from nearby towns. Firefighting units deployed a combination of equipment, including a heavy rural pump and a heavy main pump, alongside a rescue van. A sergeant was present, supported by two corporals and eleven firefighters working in shifts to manage the incident.
As the situation evolved, crews indicated that the operation would require close attention to prevent the spread of fire to adjacent compounds. The site is known for handling vehicle dismantling and disposal, which can pose unique risks when a fire breaks out, particularly when multiple metal components and fuels are involved.
