A man suffered burns to his legs while smoke filled a residence on Calle Osa Mayor in Orihuela Costa, and two local police officers required treatment for smoke inhalation following a house fire. Authorities believe an explosion occurred around 7:50 in the morning at number 9. The initial ignition may have been caused by a small device that exploded inside a room on the upper floor, where the severely injured man was located.
Three people inside
Emergency services, local police, and Torrevieja park firefighters coordinated a rapid response. At the scene, three residents were inside the duplex-style house: two women on the lower level and one man on the upper level. Investigators noted that the origin of the fire appeared to be in a workshop-like area within the dwelling. The man, severely injured, escaped with assistance from neighbors from the adjacent home, reaching safety on a balcony and thereby saving his life.
The injured man’s burns, especially on the legs and feet, required hospital treatment. A SAMU unit transported him to the hospital. Two Orihuela Local Police officers also suffered smoke inhalation but are currently stable and receiving oxygen as a precautionary measure.
rapid response
Fire crews acted swiftly, preventing flames from spreading to adjacent structures. The scene involved significant flames and thick black smoke within an otherwise largely abandoned residence. Reports suggest that intense heat caused a window to shatter, allowing the fire to generate a vertical draft and drive smoke outward through the building envelope.
In addition to a command unit from the Fire Brigade Headquarters, a heavy-duty city pump was deployed to the area. A sergeant, a corporal, and four soldiers participated in the operation, which brought the blaze under control by around 9:00 a.m. The rescue team assisted the wounded man down from a neighbor’s terrace using a sliding maneuver and stabilized him on a stretcher for transport.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible ignition from a small device, with officials noting the likelihood of an accidental blast as the cause of the fire.
