Government authorities in Aragon opened an inquiry and prepared an informative dossier to determine the status of a possible case of bullying involving a 10-year-old girl named Saray. She attempted suicide by leaping from her home balcony in Zaragoza’s San José district, according to El Periódico de Aragón.
Sources within the Ministry indicated that the Provincial National Education Organization began these investigations over the weekend after the Directorate of National Education learned about the events at Augustine Gericó School.
As part of the established protocol, the Educational Coexistence Team planned to contact the school headquarters on Monday morning to implement the necessary measures.
During the ongoing process, Saray left Miguel Servet Hospital’s intensive care unit on Sunday afternoon following a serious incident on the third floor. She survived a ten-meter fall and sustained a hip fracture, a left ankle fracture, and multiple bruises. Her condition improved, and she was transferred to the care of her parents, Katya and Carlos, who have remained by her side.
Her parents expressed that the priority now is her long-term physical and emotional healing, with professional support from the Aid Foundation for Children and Adolescents at Risk (ANAR) and other experts who will be engaged in her care.
In a statement to the newspaper, the family said that during a brief period when the mother was away from home last Friday, Saray and her younger brother were seen off with a note. The parents believe she has faced bullying at Agustín Gericó, the school she attended. They indicated that her grandmother in Colombia was told of the incident via a message and that Saray’s decision followed ongoing distress.
According to the reported story, the situation dates back to last year, with Saray returning to class and reliving months of hardship that even led her to repeat the year. Despite remaining in fourth grade this year, she faced insults and aggression from girls who were then in the fifth grade, with Saray described as the target of ongoing ridicule in school.
ask for responsibility
With Saray no longer in immediate danger, her parents are starting a battle this week to ensure that the events are addressed and that no other child endures similar suffering. They told the press that they plan to file a formal complaint with the General Directorate of Security tomorrow, seeking accountability from the school and those responsible for any action or neglect related to what happened at the school and training center.
The family asserts that the harassment began about a month after Saray started at the school. Saray arrived in Zaragoza from Colombia in November 2021 and began attending Agustín Gericó in San José in January 2022. At first, the parents believed the issues were typical adaptation challenges, but the severity increased. They reported that instructors initially dismissed the harassment as normal fights, and the family grew uncomfortable with the school’s handling.
Weeks passed, and the family took action on their own, warning that they would report those involved for mistreatment. The school year ended without a resolution, and the family never imagined that Saray would feel compelled to take such drastic steps to escape what she described as her personal hell.
