A severe storm sweeping across the Rio de Janeiro region has left at least six people dead, with heavy rainfall piling up over the past several hours. The disaster has touched multiple communities as floodwaters and mudslides disrupted daily life and damaged homes.
Among the deceased is a child in Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca neighborhood. Reports from Agencia Brasil indicate the child died when the house collapsed due to a landslide in the area. The child’s mother escaped, but the girl was swept away by mud and debris. The family had moved into the residence only three days earlier, highlighting how vulnerable newly settled households can be during extreme weather events.
In a separate incident, an 82-year-old man died as another landslide buried a home to the south of the city, with two additional fatalities reported in the metropolitan suburbs. The event underscores the ongoing risks that heavy rains pose to aging infrastructure and densely populated neighborhoods.
In a further case, a 22-year-old woman died after being buried by a landslide in Ribera de las Nieves, located roughly 400 kilometers northwest of Rio de Janeiro. Local authorities confirmed that another person in the same town was found dead following a strong mudslide and flooding event.
