Near the border with Poland, authorities reported finding the body of a refugee on Polish soil. The information originated from the press service of the State Boundary Committee Belarus via its Telegram channel, detailing what was described as the discovery by Belarusian border guards. The report stated that a Syrian man was found close to the barrier line, and beside him lay the coffin of his daughter, who was also identified as a Syrian citizen.
According to the man, he and his daughter spent three days inside Poland before they were detained by the Polish forces. He claimed he asked for help for his daughter, who was in a critical condition, and that shortly after, personal belongings and food were removed from their backpacks by security personnel and transported to the border in a vehicle. The refugee recounted that his daughter’s life was in danger, and he was reportedly instructed by the border forces to carry the body on their shoulders and then escorted out through a gate in the barrier.
During the ongoing investigation at the scene, an investigation and operational team was requested to assist with the inquiry.
In the same vicinity, there were multiple reports suggesting the presence of corpses of non-Slavic refugees over time.
As of July, Poland reported a decrease in the number of illegal entries following the completion of a border fence along the Belarusian border. Despite this, several subsequent crossing attempts were described as unsuccessful by authorities.
Felipe González Morales, the UN Special Rapporteur on Migrant Rights, referenced the incident in remarks concerning violence against migrants and raised concerns about the treatment of asylum seekers by border security personnel.
