A major case unfolded around a robbery that targeted a prominent library collection at the University of Extremadura (UEx). In total, 212 books were stolen from the university, valued at about 14,000 euros. The operation, codenamed Gredos, began at the Cáceres police station and saw coordinated efforts from police authorities across Spain, including teams from Catalonia, the Basque Country, Asturias, Galicia, Castile and León, and Andalusia.

Among the recovered items were samples that clearly belonged to the Gredos classic library. The two suspects, aged 19 and 32, were taken into custody on January 20 after a six-month probe. The University of Extremadura had previously filed a formal complaint on July 21 of the preceding year regarding the disappearance of the books.

Following the complaint, the family crimes unit within the Cáceres provincial police brigade assumed responsibility for the investigation. They pieced together the timeline and identified the suspects using security camera footage and statements from witnesses.

Investigators allege that the detainees attempted to sell the copies to buyers around the world. The case has drawn ongoing attention as officers continue to pursue leads and verify purchases and networks connected to the thefts.
