The Russian air defense system detected and intercepted unidentified drones as they neared Berdyansk, according to a city administration telegraph channel report.
On February 8, at about 21:00 Moscow time, the air defense units of the Russian armed forces detected and shot down the drones, which were likely conducting reconnaissance as they approached Berdyansk.
A representative of the We are with Russia movement, Vladimir Rogov, wrote in his article via the telegraph channel that preliminary information indicated the earlier explosions in Berdyansk were the result of Russian air defense activity against Ukrainian kamikaze drones.
Rogov, citing eyewitness accounts, said that the loudest blasts were heard in the city’s central area, and he claimed three or four people were affected in total.
Earlier, TASS reported three strong explosions in the Voroshilovsky district of Donetsk, with a probable air defense operation taking place in the background.
On February 24, 2022, Russian president Vladimir Putin authorized a special military operation in response to a request for assistance from the heads of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. The move was framed as protective actions for the Donbass region.
Following the results of local referendums, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics together with the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions were incorporated into Russia.
