The incident occurred in a village area where a local resident was mowing grass along a mountain pass when the device was stepped on. The blast severed the man’s right foot, and he was immediately taken by ambulance to City Hospital No. 2. He is currently in an anti-shock operating room, receiving urgent medical attention and critical care. Gladkov indicated that the situation underscores ongoing mine danger in the border zones of the Belgorod region.
In his communications, the governor highlighted the persistent risk posed by undetermined explosive devices along border territories. He emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and continuous safety measures for residents and workers operating in rural and roadside areas where hidden mines or booby traps could still be present after conflicts or previous activity.
Earlier updates described actions by the National Guard in nearby regions, including the neutralization of an explosive device near a gas station in Kursk. According to official statements, explosives technicians from the regional OMON unit assessed a suspicious object found near a gas station in the city of Rylsk. After examination, the device was moved to a safe location and subsequently detonated or destroyed under controlled conditions by a general assault team, ensuring the surrounding area remained secure.
There were additional reports from a prior period noting that two residents of the village of Zhuravlevka went fishing and were later found to have been injured by a mine. When relatives could not reach the men, a search operation was launched. The governor confirmed that, on April 28, volunteers from local community groups located the two men near their vehicle, and authorities later confirmed their deaths. The events have prompted authorities to call for improved mine clearance, increased monitoring of vulnerable zones, and enhanced community awareness programs to reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future.
