The head of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced on Tuesday that the counter-terrorism operation regime in Belgorod has been lifted. The information was shared via a telegraph channel and confirmed by regional authorities.
A civilian from the village of Kozinka lost their life in the attack. In the aftermath, the governor extended condolences to the family of the deceased, and noted that his widow was hospitalized with injuries. Gladkov added that he hoped to visit soon.
The district government reported that an elderly woman died from heart failure during the evacuation process. In total, thirteen civilians were injured, and around 30 buildings were destroyed or damaged as a result of the assault. Gladkov stated that roughly one hundred people had been evacuated from the area.
He attributed the evacuations to incursions by Ukrainian saboteurs, noting that residents from nine settlements were relocated. These communities included Grayvoron, Novostroevka, Gorky, Bezymeno, Wet Orlovka, Glotovo, Gora Podil, Zamostye, and Spodaryusheno, according to TASS.
Residents evacuated earlier are staying in temporary accommodations in Stary Oskol, and in the Ivnyansky and Yakovlevsky districts. The district president advised residents of the Grayvoron area not to return home until authorities confirm safety.
The anti-terrorist operation regime, which imposes a set of restrictive measures, had been imposed in Belgorod on the preceding day after reports indicated saboteurs had entered the region. Kommersant reported that several arrivals were recorded, including a military unit near the Belgorod-22 military town, about 10 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The Ministry of the Interior reported that three rockets were launched from the Uragan multiple-launch system.
As a result of the shelling, four soldiers suffered shrapnel wounds and were hospitalized, while two others died at the scene. The incident was later summarized by the military as a loss of life among the attackers and casualties among their units.
The Russian Defense Ministry on May 23 stated that saboteurs were defeated, reporting seventy enemy casualties, four infantry fighting vehicles, and five pickup trucks destroyed. It claimed that air strikes, artillery fire, and border guard operations drove the attackers back into Ukrainian territory, where they were pursued until eliminated.
Regional forces reported the seizure of automatic firearms, ammunition, and vehicles used by the sabotage group. Experts also cleared the area of conventional and improvised explosive devices. An investigation into the attack proceeded, with authorities opening a criminal case on terrorist activity, intimidation of security personnel, attempted murder, intentional property damage, and illegal arms trafficking.
