A resident of Los Palacios y Villafranca, a town in Sevilla, Spain, alerted authorities this afternoon after a troubling discovery. A live newborn baby, still attached to the umbilical cord, was found abandoned in a container and subsequently hospitalized for urgent care.
The Civil Guard told reporters from EFE that the infant was located inside an organic waste container on Mariano Benlliure street, just before 18:00. The discovery prompted an immediate emergency response, and local residents who found the baby ensured she received swift medical attention.
The infant, a girl, was carried out of the container by a neighbor who had heard faint cries and proceeded to place her in the care of medical professionals nearby. She was then rushed to Virgen de Valme hospital for evaluation and stabilization. Medical staff reported that she is currently out of danger and remains under careful observation as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have begun a formal inquiry to identify the mother and the circumstances surrounding the birth. Investigators are reviewing pregnancy records and may pursue a DNA test to aid in establishing the family connection and ensuring the child receives any needed support moving forward.
The Civil Guard confirmed that the person who reported the sound of crying and retrieved the infant played a crucial role in the rescue. The neighbor acted quickly, removing the baby from the container and transporting her to a nearby health center about a kilometer away from the original site, where she was stabilized before transfer to the hospital.
Following the initial emergency response and the baby’s safe handoff to medical professionals, the Civil Guard Judicial Police assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation. They are examining the timeline of events, potential witnesses, and any available clues that could illuminate why and how the infant was left in the container, with the aim of protecting the child and supporting any relatives who may be seeking help.
