Babchenko Fined in Russia and International Movements Echoing Legal Actions

The Moscow Zyuzinsky Court fined journalist Arkady Babchenko, who is recognized as a foreign agent in Russia, 35,000 rubles for failing to declare his status on social media. This information comes from RIA News, which reported the court’s decision.

The court sentenced Babchenko to a 35,000 ruble fine, according to a source within the agency.

In April 2023, the Russian Ministry of Justice added another dissident journalist to the list of foreign agents funding the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Earlier, in January, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs placed the journalist on its wanted list.

Babchenko left Russia in 2017 amid the belief that a criminal case had been opened against him. He lived in Kiev from 2017 to 2019 and currently resides in Estonia.

The Federal Financial Monitoring Service added Babchenko to a list of terrorists and extremists in July 2020.

In July 2023, Estonian police detained a man who threw an egg at the Russian Embassy building in Tallinn, a person later identified as Babchenko.

Earlier statements from the SBU indicated that no lawsuit had been filed against Babchenko.
