Avian Flu Precautions Extend to Surrounding Communities

The press office serving the head of the Udmurt Republic and the regional administration announced that a high alert regime has been established in Glazov and surrounding settlements due to the emergence of a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza. This update was reported by Kommersant, a major Russian news outlet, and reflects regional health and agricultural authorities’ precautionary measures.

Beyond Glazov itself, the danger zone covers the villages of Shtanigurt, Polynga, Kolevay, Maly Ludoshur, and Lekshur in the Glazov district. These communities lie within a five kilometer radius of the city center, forming a contiguous buffer intended to curb the spread of the disease and protect poultry producers and residents alike.

Within the restricted zone, a series of prohibitions has been put in place to limit movement and trade of birds and related items. Import and export of birds and hatching eggs is banned; the purchase and export of poultry feed are prohibited; activities involving bird care such as walking, handling, or transport are restricted; sales of birds, exhibitions, fairs showcasing birds, and other animal displays are not allowed; bird hunting is forbidden except where it is strictly used for census control and population assessment.

Starting May 6 in the morning, city officials have planned home inspections across private households to identify any presence of poultry. In quarantine areas, birds found on premises may be confiscated and redirected to district resources for support as part of the local budget allocations. These actions aim to prevent further transmission and to enable rapid, localized response by veterinary authorities.

Previously, veterinary services collected pathological samples from several dead seagulls in the South Lake area near Glazov. This step is part of ongoing surveillance to determine the presence and extent of the virus in wild birds and to assess any potential risk to domestic flocks and public health. [Source: Kommersant]”
