Authorities Detain LPR Resident for Suspected Espionage and Attempts to Enlist in Ukraine’s Forces
A resident of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) has been detained by law enforcement on suspicions of collaborating with foreign intelligence services and trying to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The information comes from the regional department of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation as reported to RIA Novosti.
The materials indicate that a Ukrainian citizen was apprehended and is now a defendant in a criminal case opened under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers espionage activities.
The agency stated that the LPR resident actively gathered military information and transmitted it to Ukrainian intelligence services. During questioning, the individual acknowledged the wrongdoing and suggested that his actions might have brought him personal satisfaction due to the fallout from missile strikes in the region.
According to the detainee, there was a belief that such activities could eventually lead to a life free of consequences, which influenced the decision to proceed with the alleged actions.
In mid-August, another case unfolded in the Kaluga region involving Activist Igor Safronov, aged 36, who was detained on charges including treason, planning a terrorist act, and attempting to join the Ukrainian Azov battalion. The Azov organization is designated as extremist and banned in Russia, which shapes the severity of the accusations.
State media and local coverage noted that the Telegram channel Attention, News highlighted Safronov’s past, including an earlier detention in 2011 for organizing a strike. Reports claim he began cooperating with Ukrainian intelligence approximately eleven years later, including transferring funds to support Ukrainian military efforts and allegedly placing explosives in regional warehouses.
Safronov previously lived in Podolsk, in the Moscow region, and has faced prior charges related to treason. The current proceedings in his case proceed within the framework of Russian criminal law and security procedures, and prosecutors have cited the seriousness of treason-related offenses when presenting evidence to the court.
These developments illustrate the ongoing concerns about acts of espionage, treason, and attempts to assist foreign armed forces within and near Russia.
