Around the capital city and beyond, demonstrations sparked by the Tempi train collision near Larisa drew crowds that quickly morphed into clashes. Local media outlets reported that the protests, initially linked to the rail disaster, escalated as hundreds of participants gathered in central Athens and faced off with police near the parliament precincts. The reaction from the crowd grew tense as the rally, which attracted more than seven thousand participants, began to dissipate, and unidentified individuals wearing blindfolds and gas masks then hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at security forces. The attackers also discharged flares in the direction of the retreating police, prompting a response with tear gas canisters and stun grenades to restore order.
