A man was taken into custody on Monday night, December 18, in connection with a suspected attempted murder in the violence against women arena in the north Tenerife area. The incident involved a heated dispute with the victim’s romantic partner, after which the suspect allegedly sprayed petrol toward the woman and her home. Fortunately, no fire was ignited and the injuries, if any, were not life threatening at that time.

The events unfolded in the municipality of Los Realejos, where authorities believe the accused person was involved. Investigators from the National Police identified the suspect as the alleged assailant after responding to the scene. Initial information indicates the incident occurred sometime after 22:30 at a residence in the Lomo La Viuda district.

Initial reports from witnesses suggested that the incident was a matter of gender-based violence, with the victim allegedly doused with gasoline by a man who had been her partner. Upon arrival of officers from the Puerto de la Cruz Los Realejos Police Station, the suspect had already left the area.

Escape

Following the incident, police coordinated with nearby units in case the suspect was located. It appears the accused subsequently fled in a vehicle and later experienced a collision. The collision enabled the National Police to identify and detain him, leading to his arrest.

In response to the circumstances, local officers from Los Realejos were deployed to conduct alcohol and drug testing related to the case. The results will be included in the court records and forwarded to the Court of First Instance and Instruction serving the La Orotava region.

The arrested individual was transferred to the police station facilities and is expected to be presented to the judicial authority in Puerto de la Cruz. The case is being handled by the Family and Women’s Care Unit UFAM of the National Police, with investigators focusing on the area in the northern part of Tenerife.

General guidance for victims of gender-based violence remains available, with dedicated hotlines and support services provided by authorities to assist those in need in multiple languages. Those seeking urgent help should contact emergency services immediately.
