Arrest in Absence: Arkhangelsk Court Involves Student for Discrediting Military, Justifying Terrorism

A court in the Primorsky District of the Arkhangelsk Region has ordered the arrest of Olesya Krivtsova, a student at the Federal University of the North Arctic, on charges that include discrediting the Russian armed forces and justifying terrorism. The court’s decision came after she violated the terms of her house arrest, and she was named an extremist and terrorist by authorities in a formal list. The information was reported by TASS.

Earlier, authorities indicated that Krivtsova had left the Russian Federation, according to the same agency.

According to the inspector, the court granted the request for a restraining measure and decided to place her under arrest for breaching the previously set house arrest conditions.

Krivtsova was detained in late December 2022 on accusations stemming from a post in a classmates’ chat that was interpreted as discrediting the military. Additionally, a story about the explosion on the Crimean Bridge shared on her Instagram led to charges of justifying terrorism. In Russia, Meta’s parent company is designated as extremist, which affects content and access in the country. The Arkhangelsk court initially issued a restriction on certain actions, but in early January that restriction was replaced with house arrest. On January 10, she was added to the official list of student extremists and terrorists.

A separate report notes a clash between a former Moscow resident and a 20-year-old neighbor, involving a cartoon about Vladimir Putin.
