Arkhangelsk Yasen-M Submarine Enters Service as Russia Reinforces Nuclear Fleet

The Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, has launched the Yasen-M class nuclear submarine cruiser Arkhangelsk, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Officials say that on November 29 a boat-douse withdrawal ceremony took place in Severodvinsk, conducted under the supervision of Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy. The ministry noted the event as a formal milestone in the vessel’s acceptance into service.

Arkhangelsk was named to honor the historic northern city whose residents helped shape the Russian Navy and support the development of the Arctic maritime region. The designation reflects a tradition of anchoring naval heritage in the broader story of Russia’s sea power.

The Russian Navy affirmed its intent to keep prioritizing the development of the nuclear-powered fleet, describing it as a cornerstone of national security and strategic deterrence. The leadership underscored that strengthening multi-purpose and strategic submarine capabilities remains a central objective in collaboration with the defense industry.

In a related briefing, Admiral Evmenov reiterated that ongoing work includes advancing a series of Project 636.3 Varshavyanka submarines, highlighting a continued program of modernizing coastal and blue-water submarine forces. The updates align with Moscow’s broader plans to expand year-to-year capabilities across its submarine fleet and to sustain a robust underwater fleet through steady production and modernization cycles.

Earlier comments from Russian officials indicated concerns about potential Western missile defenses, including reflections on the Bulava program. The dialogue emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining a diverse and capable arsenal to deter threats and preserve regional security dynamics.
