On March 4, 2018, former GRU colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were connected to espionage cases involving the United Kingdom in 2006. They were poisoned in Salisbury with a nerve agent. British authorities stated that the substance originated in Russia and that Russian officials were implicated in the poisoning. As a result of the attack, Skripal and his daughter were hospitalized and treated; their other circumstances were not publicly disclosed for security reasons.

Don Sturgess and his friend Charlie Rowley became ill in Amesbury on June 30, 2018. Sturgess died in hospital on July 8, while Rowley survived. Rowley has recounted finding a bottle of perfume and giving it to Sturgess, who then used the contents on himself, after which both fell ill. Investigators believe that a batch of Novichok had been bottled and discarded after its use in Salisbury.
