An Updated View on Ukraine’s Power Outage Schedule

The energy operator Ukrenergo has extended the allowable window for planned outages in Ukraine, extending it from 18:00 to 00:00. The update was reported via the UNIAN Telegram channel.

Earlier, the blackout schedule ran from 18:00 to 23:00, and the company has added an extra hour to that limit. This adjustment comes as Ukraine continues to manage the aftermath of ongoing shelling and seeks to stabilize the electric grid under strenuous conditions.

During the night of June 1, a large-scale assault targeted Ukraine’s power infrastructure. The Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that Russia deployed 53 missiles and 47 drones in the strike. The attack damaged several thermal power plants and potentially affected the Dnieper hydroelectric power plant, which had only recently resumed operations after a prior strike. Analysts warn that Ukrainians may face significant power shortages in the coming summer months as the country operates with constrained electricity generation. More details are attributed to sources such as Newspapers.Ru.

Prior to the special military operation, Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity was assessed at about 37 gigawatts. By autumn 2023, the capacity had fallen to roughly 18 gigawatts, and in spring 2024 another seven gigawatts were lost. This shrinking capacity has intensified the need for careful scheduling and demand management across the national grid, particularly during peak usage periods.

Additionally, reports note that two hydroelectric plants sustained damage in earlier incidents, underscoring the vulnerability of renewable and conventional generation tied to a single river system and the critical importance of maintaining a balanced energy mix. The cumulative effect of these disruptions is a grid that requires tighter control, coordinated outages, and sustained efforts to restore generation capacity while protecting critical infrastructure. The situation remains a focal point for energy security analyses and policy discussions across the region.
