National Police officers in Alicante detained a man following the theft of a backpack from a vehicle and a parallel attempt to flee in another car. After the robbery, the suspect accelerated to escape but encountered the victim, who confronted him directly. The suspect used the vehicle to pressure the victim out of the way, yet the bystander stood firm in defense of his property.
The victim, a worker at a construction site, was accompanied by a colleague from a different company. Their cars were parked along a public road. In his statement to investigators, the worker recalled that he had just left the building where he was employed when a man approached and opened the passenger door of his partner’s vehicle.
The alleged thief appeared startled and quickly moved away, hopping into a car parked on the same street. Moments later, the victim discovered that his own vehicle had been broken into and his backpack with several tools was missing. The tools carried an estimated value of around 500 euros.
Driven by the loss, the victim followed the suspect’s vehicle and watched it stop at a red light. As the two cars came alongside each other, he blocked the road with his own vehicle and demanded the return of the backpack.
Rather than comply, the driver attempted to escape by pressing the accelerator repeatedly, making it seem like the car would start. The maneuver seemed designed to push the victim aside so the thief could flee with the stolen items.
When the victim did not retreat, the suspect accelerated again with the clear intention of striking. The bystander had to jump and grab the hood to avoid being run over. The act placed him at serious risk, as the driver did not stop and sped away at high speed, continuing for about 500 meters while the victim clung to the front of the car as best as possible. He sustained minor injuries and later received medical attention at a local health center.
Authorities at the Alicante Northern District Police Station II opened the investigation upon receiving the report. The Investigation Group conducted an extensive inquiry, and after careful police work, they identified and detained the man believed to be responsible. A 42-year-old Moroccan national was placed in custody of the Court of Inquiry in Alicante for further proceedings. The incident is under investigation as a serious assault connected to a vehicle theft, with ongoing efforts to collect additional evidence and testimonies to support the case. Members of the public who have information are encouraged to come forward to assist the investigation.
Officials noted that this case underscores the risk of vehicle break-ins on public roads and the need for immediate reporting of suspicious activity.
