In Torrevieja, the Alicante Civil Guards arrested a man traveling in a stolen vehicle who had fled a breathalyzer check. The pursuit extended for over twenty minutes as the suspect ignored road safety rules, weaving through roundabouts and traveling in the opposite direction, endangering everyone on the road. After capture, the individual attempted to flee on foot and injured one of the officers in the process.

A tourist sped away from a breathalyzer checkpoint set up by the Torrevieja Civil Guard Traffic Detachment on the N-332, just as the vehicle approached the officers at about 6:50 am. The driver soon disappeared from view, and a rapid chase ensued that lasted more than twenty minutes. The vehicle raced at high speed, violated traffic directions, and took detours through roundabouts in both the urban area and along the national highway.

By disregarding every police signal to stop, the driver exposed himself and other road users to serious danger, including the officers who followed. The situation demanded careful assessment to avoid greater risks, yet the agents succeeded in apprehending the suspect at kilometer 50.3, a dead-end street in Torrevieja near the N-322, where the driver was observed struggling before being stopped.

Further investigation revealed that the same vehicle had been involved in a crash, with a leak, in Orihuela earlier that day. Once the car was brought to a halt, the driver realized he was cornered, abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the street, and fled on foot, risking other motorists on the road.

During the arrest, the suspect resisted, attempting to escape through a struggle and causing minor injuries to one of the agents. He was ultimately subdued and taken into custody. He was identified as a 21-year-old man with a criminal history involving property offenses.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a knife, several grams of marijuana, and various items of dubious origin hidden inside. Investigators confirmed that the recovered jewels had been stolen from a residence in Orihuela at dawn the same day, and the keys to the vehicle were reported stolen as well.

In one photograph, officers are seen examining the interior of the car where a knife and precious pieces were discovered. The case underscores the seriousness of the incident and the level of risk posed to the public by the suspect’s actions.

Authorities noted that the vehicle owner and the stolen vehicle had been abroad in Sweden at the time of the theft. The absence of notice about the thefts prompted investigators to review the surrounding circumstances more closely.

A formal criminal complaint was filed against the detainee, in addition to charges for two road-safety offenses—reckless driving and driving without a license—along with counts of disobedience to authority, theft, and related offenses tied to the vehicle and home burglary. The detainee remained in custody as proceedings continued.

The Torrevieja Guard and Instruction Court ordered precautionary measures, resulting in the detainee’s release under specified conditions pending further investigation. [Fuente: Guardia Civil]
