Alicante’s Civil Guard officers carried out a targeted operation under the Great Security Plan, arresting a man wanted on a warrant in Calp. The action also led to the identification of a woman with a prior police record tied to the same crime pattern. The pair is believed to belong to a criminal network that specialized in robbing elderly people using a technique commonly known as the cogotero method.
Officials from the Benemérita confirmed that both individuals are linked to a criminal organization focused on exploiting seniors for financial gain. The cogotero method hinges on a brief, distracting interaction that lets a thief steal valuables while the victim remains unaware until it is too late.
As part of preventive work by the Calp Main Station Investigation Area on May 25, authorities targeted a zone near multiple banks where older residents are often exposed to robbery and theft. The goal was to curb offenses in spaces frequently frequented by potential victims who are at higher risk due to age.
During the operation, investigators observed the two suspects acting in concert. A man and a woman communicated remotely, coordinating their movements around senior clients leaving a bank branch. When agents approached to verify identities, the suspects fled in opposite directions.
Following their capture, it became evident how the scheme operated. The suspects altered their clothing to avoid recognition and, after cross-checking with contacts, were found to have multiple false identities used at different police stations to commit crimes in several Spanish towns.
Both individuals are identified as members of the cogotero organization. The man carried an outstanding arrest warrant tied to four thefts attributed to the cogotero method, tied to cases handled by the Vinaròs Civil Guard Detachment in Castellón province and Barcelona. After these findings, authorities proceeded with the arrest and informed the plaintiff at hand.
The 50-year-old Chilean national was brought before the Denia Judicial District Guard Court and placed under precautionary measures pending further proceedings.
The Civil Guard notes that the Great Security Plan remains active across the province, focusing on measures to prevent crime and safeguard the well-being of elderly residents. In line with these efforts, it provides practical guidance for seniors when dealing with banking transactions and other routine activities.
Tips for seniors interacting with financial institutions include practical steps to reduce risk: keep cards and personal items secure, avoid exposing PINs, and refrain from displaying large sums of cash. When using ATMs, it is wise to memorize card numbers and be mindful of surroundings. Whenever possible, arrange monthly payments to minimize trips outside with money in hand. For significant tasks such as signing documents or handling large payments, assistance from a trusted companion is recommended to enhance safety and awareness.
