Spanish Police Detain Man in Alicante for Alleged Public Health Offense Linked to Anabolic Diet Aids Smuggling

Authorities in Alicante have arrested a man suspected of a public health crime tied to distributing anabolic steroids, which were allegedly obtained in advance through parcel delivery firms from Portugal.

Investigators began the case after police learned that a large number of anabolic substances were being circulated through courier companies.

Officials from the Alicante Provincial Judicial Police Brigade, specialized crime group, took charge of the probe as the matter unfolded.

During the investigation, officers verified that the suspect had received, over less than a year, 31 reimbursement-on-delivery packages originating from Portugal, totaling more than 2,700 euros. Some of these packages were inspected with scanners to determine their contents, and they appeared to contain vials consistent with medical products that could be anabolic in nature.

The high volume of these substances arriving in a short timeframe led investigators to suspect that the recipient might be distributing or supplying them to others.

Following additional inquiries that corroborated potential public health offenses, agents seized a new package upon the suspect’s collection and proceeded with his detention.

At the time of arrest, a luggage item was seized containing various anabolic substances, all reportedly illegal medicines, including a box of 10 vials of human growth hormone, a vial of testosterone enanthate and a vial of testosterone decanoate, a vial of drostanolone enanthate, and a vial of trenbolone acetate, according to the police report.

These substances, classified as anabolic steroids, require medical prescription for administration and are commonly used in clandestine bodybuilding circles to rapidly gain muscle mass; their use can lead to serious health consequences.

The investigation identified the detainee as a 38-year-old man who was subsequently turned over to the guard duty court in Alicante with the ongoing proceedings and evidence gathered during the operation.

The authorities are continuing the inquiry to determine whether other individuals were involved in this illicit activity.

Further details will be shared as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available to law enforcement and public health authorities. [Policía Nacional]
