Alicante-based Actiu, headquartered in Castalla, has emerged as a leading furniture supplier for one of Spain’s most significant healthcare investments: the new Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. The Berbegal family business secured the first lot under a competition initiated by the Madrid Health Service to furnish the complex with chairs, tables, cabinets, and a full range of hospital furniture. The project value exceeded three million euros, as reported in the Official Journal of the Community of Madrid and confirmed by the company itself.
The new building destined to house Hospital 12 de Octubre covers more than 135,000 square meters across ten above-ground floors, plus a basement for support services. The facility comprises over 700 patient rooms, both double and single occupancy, 41 operating theaters, 109 intensive care beds for critically ill patients, and 42 NICU positions for newborns.

After completing the work last December, the project has entered its final phase: the installation of all furniture and sanitary fittings essential for the patient and healthcare staff transfers. The new hospital is anticipated to be operational in spring 2024, according to hospital estimates. (Actiu, project notes)
Designed for well-being
The entire project was developed in collaboration with the hospital management. Emphasis was placed on selecting sustainable, durable materials suitable for the environment being equipped. Oak and white finishes were chosen to create a warm atmosphere where appropriate, with softer or more neutral tones balanced against vibrant colors in areas for children and adults alike. Furniture was selected to promote the well-being of patients and staff alike, avoiding cold environments. Ergonomic solutions are central, including the A+S Work chair, Actiu’s latest operating chair, the result of two decades of experience in this segment. (Product overview)
Tables in consultation areas adopt round structures to foster open, friendly connections between professionals and patients, reducing barriers and encouraging trust. Workspaces for medical staff were designed as flexible environments, with training rooms and multi-purpose areas that can be reconfigured to meet changing needs.
The featured furniture covers waiting areas, patient lounges, spaces for medical staff, family rooms, pediatric zones, doctors’ offices, and work zones for healthcare teams. (Company project notes)
“The pandemic underscored the value of robust healthcare infrastructure and the importance of caring for its users—both professionals and patients. The process of expanding and upgrading production capacity, carried out alongside the company’s digital transformation, marks a milestone for Actiu’s strength and capability,” remarks Joaquin Berbegal, CEO of Actiu.
