The three young victims were Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all aged nine. Among the adults who lost their lives were Katherine Koonce, sixty, Mike Hill, sixty-one, and Cynthia Peak, sixty-one, as reported by authorities.

Hale entered the building through a side door to gain access. Security camera footage released by law enforcement shows the sequence. After entering, Hale moved to the second floor and began firing on personnel. As officers arrived, Hale redirected fire at police vehicles from the second floor. In a coordinative exchange of gunfire with responding officers in the lobby, Hale was fatally shot by the police. The first emergency call was traced to about fourteen minutes earlier.
