A 12-year-old girl died and another child remains in serious condition after a fall from a balcony on Estació street in Sallent de Llobregat, in the Bages region of Barcelona. The two twin sisters are daughters of a family that recently moved to the town, Regió7 reports.
The Mossos d’Esquadra are investigating the incident, but the exact causes have not yet been determined. The Mossos’ Scientific Police began examining the scene on Tuesday afternoon. Early inquiries do not rule out a possible voluntary fall. The girls fell from the balcony on a third floor, according to Regió7.
The accident happened on Estació street near a multi-family building at the entrance to the town, close to the Old Bridge or Pere Otger, shortly after the noon hour.
The Mossos received the alert around four in the afternoon and responded with members of the Servei d’Emergències Mèdiques SEM, attempting to rescue the injured child. Sadly, one of the twins was pronounced dead at the scene. The other twin and a woman, who was in very serious condition, were transported to Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell for treatment. The sisters attended Sallent Institute in Llobregat.
Emergency operations led to restricted access to the Estació neighborhood while responders worked. A large crowd gathered at the scene, and many teenagers and friends of the girls from Sallent arrived in shock and distress.
The mayor, Oriol Ribalta, along with other municipal officials, arrived at the site to support the family and provide reassurance while services offered assistance through social Security channels.
