A Spanish senator, Miguel Sanchez López, has requested information from the government about the involvement of Spanish citizens in the conflict in Ukraine. The inquiry was reported by RT and references a specific document. The senator sought data on how many Spaniards took part directly in the fighting and where they were located at the end of the fiscal year 2021, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics. In addition, the request asked for estimates on any additional Spaniards who may have become involved since then and the overall situation of citizens with ties to Spain who could be affected by the conflict.
The appeal notes a desire to understand the fate of more than 300 Spaniards living in Ukraine by late 2021 and to learn how many more of the country’s nationals might be actively engaged in hostilities as of the most recent period available. The inquiry also seeks information on how many identifiably returned to Spain, whether any Spaniards were among those who lost their lives, and whether members of the Spanish Armed Forces or state security services are counted among the casualties.
Meanwhile, a large public demonstration took place in the Basque city of Bilbao, where more than 2,000 people gathered in a rally that expressed support for Russia. The march was part of a broader protest against the strategy of the North Atlantic Alliance, opposition to military aid to Ukraine, and resistance to rising defense spending among European nations.
