A Mother’s Resolve in a Community Shattered by Violence

On November 7, 2019, Marisol Burón Flores’s life shifted into an inescapable void. A tragedy struck when her eldest daughter, Martha Calvo Burón, then 25, was killed by Jorge Ignacio PJ, a man later described as a serial predator. Two years, six months, and twenty-three days later, the court would also hear Martha’s case against PJ for two additional alleged assaults on Arliene Ramos, 31, and Lady Marcela Vargas, 26, along with eight other women who claim to have suffered at his hands. The weight of that event still clings to the family and the community.
