A person under 16 years old breached security measures of foreign origin and slipped into a police headquarters in Madrid, in the Canillas district, where two pistols and ammunition were stolen from lockers. Agents reported to Efe that the minor was arrested hours later after authorities tracked the incident through security footage, and the two firearms were recovered on the premises.
Initial assessments indicate the youngster scaled a wall nearly three meters high that bordered the complex, and there is speculation that others in the same age group may have assisted. After wandering through the facility for several minutes without being detected by the police on duty, the minor entered a small storage area where some agents’ belongings were kept.
The young suspect reportedly caused damage to several lockers and obtained two pistols along with ammunition. He then exited the police complex without informing any officers who were on shift. The incident was soon noticed by security personnel who reviewed the complex’s extensive network of cameras and verified the facts.
Investigators quickly made progress. The underage individual was arrested on the same Sunday and the two pistols were recovered. The inquiry remains active, with sources cited by Efe confirming that the boy is being held at a juvenile facility near the Canillas complex.
The Jupol union, which held a majority on the Police Council, called for increased personnel dedicated to security and surveillance of such facilities. In a public statement issued this Tuesday, the union underscored that high-security centers like the Canillas complex attract criminal and terrorist elements because of the sensitive information they house.
Additionally, the union expressed support for the officers who secured the detained minor’s seized weapons, arguing that they acted appropriately given the circumstances and should not bear responsibility for the security lapse.
In statements to Efe, representatives from the United Police Unit SUP expressed support for the officers working at the Canillas complex at the time of the incident but emphasized caution until all facts are clarified. They noted the need for a careful and transparent investigation to determine how the breach occurred and what measures will prevent a recurrence.
