It is not recommended to wash dishes with washing powders or detergents intended for bathroom cleaning. Sergei Shikhov, associate professor at the Department of Veterinary and Sanitary Specialization and Biosafety at ROSBIOTECH University, told socialbites.ca.

“Washing powders contain anionic surfactants (A-surfactants), which effectively remove stains from fabrics, but have an extremely negative effect on the body. The product is difficult to wash from dishes, so its components can enter the body along with food. “They settle in the body and cause irreparable harm: the person becomes less resistant to viruses, damaging the lungs and liver,” he explained.

Caustic substances are also dangerous – alkalis and acids. These are marked with a special sign or “Caution, contains acid (alkali)!” marked with the text.

“When using such mixtures you should be especially careful and use personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, apron in high concentrations, special shoes and respirator). If it gets into eyes or accidentally swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. If alkali gets on the face, eye burn may occur – an injury that damages the cornea, sclera, retina, vitreous body, leading to partial or complete loss of vision. If the product enters the body in large quantities, it can cause damage to the stomach (acid) and esophagus (alkali),” noted Shikhov.

Alkali cause rapid liquefaction necrosis without crust formation, and tissue damage continues until the alkali is neutralized or diluted. The expert emphasized that alkalis damage the esophagus more than the stomach, but both are seriously damaged when swallowed in large quantities.

Dishwasher detergents are low-toxic and low-hazard substances and are a mixture of surfactants (surfactants).

“Their continuous use in accordance with the intended purpose does not have negative consequences for human health. Accidentally swallowing them once does not cause major problems, except for an unpleasant sensation (they are not tasty). But for all detergents, regardless of the level of danger they pose, it is recommended to follow the rules of storage: away from children; in tightly closed original packaging; do not pour into food containers,” the expert concluded.
