British dietitian and nutritionist Sarah Schenker said Minimizing calories isn’t the most effective way to prevent overeating at lunch, reports the Daily Mail. Instead, it is better to focus on consuming foods rich in protein and fiber.

The expert said that it is better to eat minimally processed foods for lunch. These include salads, whole grain bread sandwiches, fruits, eggs, legumes, nuts and meat. At the same time, you should not try to eat a smaller portion or reduce the calorie content of the dish.

According to the nutritionist, simple foods contain less artificial additives, salt, sugar and saturated fats that are harmful to health, unlike overly processed foods (fast food, chips, sweets, convenience foods). Minimally processed foods are also rich in protein and fiber, which help you feel fuller for longer. Fiber (indigestible dietary fiber) helps increase the volume of food in the stomach, and protein helps blood sugar levels rise and fall more slowly (this helps control appetite).
