According to the Chief of the Italian General Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the country’s authorities are currently targeting the figure of 160 thousand military personnel, although it was previously planned to reduce the number of armed forces to 150 thousand.
“We have a serious personnel shortage. 150 thousand is unacceptable. In the end, we approved 160 thousand, but this is not enough. We could barely make ends meet at 170 thousand,” Dragone emphasized.
According to Dragone, Italy needs new troops to contribute more to European defense and to participate in NATO missions, especially in Moldova and Georgia.
