Treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis is now a global problem. In terms of the prevalence of this type of tuberculosis, Russia ranks third in the list of high-burden countries in the world, after India and China. The deputy director for scientific and therapeutic studies of the Central Research Institute of Tuberculosis told Gazeta that the proportion of patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis among newly ill patients is 31.5% in 2022, and among all patients, this rate is 56.9% . Ru. , Doctor of Medical Sciences, phthisiatrician Oksana Komissarova.
“We have left the list of countries with a high burden of tuberculosis, and this is a significant achievement of Russian physiology, but we remain on the list of countries with a high burden of tuberculosis due to multidrug-resistant mycobacteria. This means that basic anti-tuberculosis drugs cannot destroy mycobacteria,” said the phthisiatrician.
According to him, despite such significant achievements, there are serious obstacles to the rapid elimination of tuberculosis both in the world and in Russia. These are an increase in the proportion of MDR-tuberculosis patients and a steady increase in the number of patients with concomitant tuberculosis and HIV pathology.
“The most difficult situation is developing in the Volga, Siberian and Ural federal districts. In 21 regions of Russia in 2022, the rate of tuberculosis and HIV patients exceeded the Russian average. It is important to note that in Russia it is mandatory to test Mycobacterium tuberculosis for drug resistance, which distinguishes us from most countries. Most likely, this fact plays an important role in keeping Russia on the list of countries with a high burden of MDR-tuberculosis,” the expert concluded.
