Braces not only serve to correct the bite, they can also be a preparation for prosthetics or dental implantation. They can be placed at any age. Orthodontist Arina Dmitrievna Bolovina told this to the Health Committee of the Volgograd Region.
“The main goal of orthodontic treatment is to normalize function (including biting and chewing food). Treatment with a system of braces is indicated if there are complaints about malocclusion, the position of individual teeth, the aesthetic defect of the smile, and also as a preparatory stage for implantation and prosthetics. “It is also worth mentioning the use of braces after splint treatment for the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunctions,” he said.
There are absolute contraindications to wearing braces (serious systemic diseases or cancer, acute mental disorders), but age is not one of them. Orthodontic treatment is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. And in case of enamel hypoplasia, it may be recommended to correct the bite not with braces, but with aligners (aligners).
Special braces allow patients to visit the doctor every 2.5 months rather than once a month. However, it is important to be prepared for the discomfort that braces may cause.
“It is necessary to brush your teeth after each meal, follow a diet excluding hard foods, because sometimes even an unsuccessful bite of a bread crust can disrupt the fixation of the braces. It is also necessary to be prepared to feel a certain level of discomfort and sometimes pain when moving teeth in the first few days after each activation of the braces system. In the final stages of treatment, the patient must wear elastic to ensure proper contact between the teeth. “All of this requires some effort from the person undergoing orthodontic treatment,” the doctor concluded.
