The husband of Russian tourist Maria Rigovich, who was kidnapped in Mexico, told socialbites.ca that she has been released. According to Alexey, the Russian woman is currently being taken to the immigration service.

“I don’t know exactly how she was released. I know the police came for her. Her family told me. They gave me the number of the police officer next to Masha. Then, after a while, we managed to call and talk for about ten minutes. Then they said they would take her to the immigration office.” said Alexey.

He explained that Masha went to Mexico to volunteer in churches and help immigrants. After she was kidnapped by members of a local cartel, Maria’s family appealed to the Russian consulate in Mexico City for help.

On March 14, 23-year-old Maria, who was flying solo to tour Latin America, was stopped by members of a Mexican cartel on the road from Monterrey to Reynosa, near the US border. The girl was traveling in a car with her family, with whom she was staying couchsurfing. The Mexicans were released, but the Russian woman was demanded to pay for “travelling through their territory.” Maria’s husband transferred $2.4 thousand to her card as ransom, but then he lost contact with his wife.
