Adults who experienced amblyopia (lazy eye syndrome) in childhood are more likely to suffer from hypertension, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. ECclinicMedicine.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 126,000 Britons aged between 40 and 69. Of 3,238 participants who reported experiencing amblyopia in childhood, 82.2% had poor vision in one eye.

Overall, having amblyopia increased the risk of diabetes by 29%, hypertension by 25%, and obesity by 16%. Additionally, amblyopia survivors had a higher risk of heart attack, even after controlling for other factors (general health, income, and ethnicity). The risks were particularly high in patients with poor eyesight.

Amblyopia, in which vision does not develop properly in one eye, affects four out of 100 people. This condition is caused by the brain’s inability to properly process the visual signal from the affected eye. In the UK, all children are screened for the disease by the age of five.

“We emphasize that our study does not demonstrate a causal relationship between amblyopia and poor health in adulthood,” the scientists said.
