INSIDE UC Davis (US Dollar) announced the beginning of a new phase in testing the hormonal birth control gel for men.
Hormonal gel, which should be applied to the shoulders for men, works on the same principle as female birth control pills. They use two hormones, progestin and estrogen, to prevent pregnancy. The gel for men contains a progestin (Nesterone), which inhibits sperm production without affecting testosterone levels.
Possible side effects of the gel include dry or oily skin, increased or decreased libido, hair growth or loss, and mood swings. One participant in the California study reported only slight weight gain and increased libido.
Researchers had hoped the gel would work the same way as birth control pills for women, but scientists said it worked better than expected. However, its effect is reversible and the man’s fertility should be restored within a few months of stopping the gel.
Clinical trials of the second (penultimate) phase, conducted at centers around the world, have been conducted at the University of California for the fourth year.
